The beginning of this battle demonstrated a group of destroyers working together to capture point C and swing around to flank the enemy. The Tachibana was one of two Sakura Class destroyers developed in 1911. Originally they were planned to be a larger class of vessel, improving on the Umikaze class. However due to budget cuts, the ships were actually built much smaller in displacement that intended. For the engines, a coal fired triple expansion system was used instead of an oil fired turbine used in the Umikaze. This engine was more reliable and used less fuel, increasing it's range. Due to the agreements outlined in the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 between The United Kingdom and Japan, the Sakura Class destroyers were used in overseas operations during World War I. This was chiefly because of the improved range over other destroyers in their fleet. By 1912, the ships were demoted to second-class destroyers and in 1932 they were retired from service.
