An Epicenter match in the Light Cruiser Atlanta. In the opening of the battle I was able to rain down shells onto an enemy Murmansk and earn a 'First Blood' kill. Heavily damaged, I then tried to hide behind the island and was waiting to see if that enemy DD would pop around the corner. At least when I died, I had taken two ships with me and helped protect and cap the point. The Atlanta class of ships possessed an unusual arrangement with it's main guns. They were equipped with eight turrets containing two five inch dual purpose guns. Three were on the bow in super-firing configuration, three were on the stern, and two were amidships. This gave the ships a relatively high volume of anti-aircraft equipment, but these guns were considered by some to be inadequate for ship-to-ship surface combat. The Atlanta was classified as a Light Cruiser, with the designation CL-51. However because of the anti-aircraft armament, some documents of the time refer to the ship as CLAA-51. One night during the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Japanese destroyer Akatsuki used her spotlight to illuminate the Atlanta. The American Cruiser was shortly set upon by two other enemy destroyers, Inazuma and Ikazuchi. One of these vessels was able to strike the Atlanta with a torpedo, which severely damaged the engineering areas of the ship. The Atlanta attributed to the sinking of the destroyer Akatsuki. During the confusion, USS San Francisco mistook Atlanta for a Japanese ship and fired into her hull. Luckily the shell did not explode and the Francisco discontinued firing once they could see the outline of the ship. By the morning, the crippled warship was attempting to be towed by the USS Bobolink. During the tow a Mitsubishi G4M "Betty Bomber" aircraft attempted to attack, but one of the few working 5 inch guns was able to drive it off. However it was clear to the captain that the ship was not in a salvageable condition. With permission from his superiors, he ordered the ship to be abandoned. The surviving crew left the ship and a demolition charge was set to allow the ship to sink. Another Atlanta class ship, USS Juneau, was also destroyed during the same battle, which drew concerns about the ship class.
