During the Battle of Cape Esperance, Furutaka sustained over 90 direct hits while engaged with American cruisers and destroyers. Her damage caused her to lose power and multiple fires broke out on the ship. She eventually sunk with some of her crew being rescued by retreating Japanese vessels and some others picked up by US ships.
