Just a simple cruise in BB-26. I remember playing this match and thinking, there was good team work with the other ships I was with. We were able to sweep around from the south and close in on the enemy. The South Carolina, and her sister, USS Michigan were the first two dreadnoughts to enter service with the United States Navy. The ships were longer and had greater displacement than the previous Mississippi Class battleships. The main armor belt was thicker, 12 to 8 inches versus the 9 to 6 of the preceding class. The ship also had twice the amount of guns as previous designs, housing eight 12 inch guns inside four turrets, two on the bow and two on the stern. This was accomplished by super-firing turret design. The monitor, USS Florida (BM-9) was used as an experimental test bed for the superfiring turret system. The idea was to place multiple turrets, in-line on the deck of a ship, by elevating one of the turrets on top of a superstructure. These tests proved successful and as a result, the South Carolina's turret layout became the first superfiring battleship. This design increased the amount of guns a large warship could carry as well as increase the ability to broadside fire with all of the primary guns.
