Atago was a heavy Japanese cruiser. The second ship of the Takao class cruisers which consisted of four ships. The design borrowed elements from the preceding Myoko Class as well as the experimental cruiser, Yubari. Although classified as a cruiser, Atago had a very battleship-like attributes. Unfortunately the sea worthiness was compromised due to being so top heavy. Like other ships in her class, she was named after a mountain; Mount Atago near Kyoto. The Takao class ships were assigned to Sentai-4 (Squadron-4) of the 2nd Fleet of Japan. She participated in many engagements including the Battle of Leyte Gulf where she served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita's strike force. On October 23rd 1944 while in the Palawan Passage, the task force was engaged by a pair of US Submarines, USS Darter and USS Dace. Darter sunk Atago, her sister ship Maya, and heavily damaged the class lead Takao. The sinking of the Atago was so rapid that Vice Admiral Kurita was forced to swim for his life, eventually being picked up by a IJN destroyer and transferred to the Yamato. Atago is currently available as a premium ship and she behaves, in game, very much like a battleship. This of course means she's a generously sized target, however she does have good speed and pretty decent range.
