One thing about the Hosho is the two squadrons of torpedo planes allows you to catch smaller enemies in the cross fire. At least that's how I was able to take out the first Destroyer, giving me the "First Blood" achievement in this match. With two carriers per team, I focused on supporting the east side of the map. Much like the USS Langley, the IJN Hosho was initially used by the Japanese Navy to test carrier tactics. The experience in aircraft handling, take-off and landings would aid in future carrier development. Initially, the ship had a superstructure on the right of the flight deck and the engine room funnels extended through the top of the ship. After suggestions from the aircrew to remove the obstructions, the superstructure was removed and the funnels were reconfigured to vent horizontally along the side of the ship. The original configuration is unseen in the game. The hanger area of the ship, which was split into two compartments, limited the number of aircraft the ship could carry. The original aircraft were Mitsubishi 1MF fighters and B1M torpedo planes. Over time the ship would later carry newer improved aircraft including the Nakajima A1N, A2N, A4N and Mitsubishi A5M fighters as well as the Mitsubhishi B2M, Kugisho B3Y and Yokosuka B4Y torpedo bombers.
