Next Car Game: Wreckfest [Early Access] - Speedway Figure 8 with Euro Coupe - YouTube xenofoxx

The development of Next Car Game, now called Wreckfest, has been slow. However I think Bugbear just wants the game to be as good as it can be, and are spending a lot of time with their physics engine. It's still pretty-much a working prototype at this point, but I'm a patient gamer who doesn't mine the wait. Here's a recent update with a new vehicle and a new track. I really like how this game is shaping up.

Wreckfest

An Elimination Race doesn't have a fixed number of laps. Instead it there is a timer that counts down. Every time it reaches zero, the car in last position is eliminated. The eliminated cars engine explodes and they coast to a stop, remaining as obstacles on the track for the drivers still running. The race continues until one vehicle is remaining. This was a new feature added to the early access update on 6/30/2015.

With the recent update to Bugbear's Wreckfest, we got a speedway themed track and a new American style muscle car. Also the game was updated to support 64 bit mode and DX11. In my previous video I was sticking to the 32 bit version. Steering is still different in this version but manageable. For those wondering I use a 360 controller. I must admit, this track seems to be lacking detail, but it's new and probably an incomplete prototype. The car itself is a nice addition.

I can say that "Next Car Game" is one of those that will eventually be a great game, but is a pure case of a studio putting something in Early Access way too early in development. Some fans have started to turn sour at the long development process. As a software developer myself I understand that things sometimes take time to be done well, and in this case, writing a soft-body physics engine from scratch can't be an easy task. So for me, I'm not upset with Bugbear's slow development time. But I do feel the heat from the community. In June/July of 2015 we got our first major update in a long time. According to the dev notes, a lot of the effort has gone into the game mechanics themselves. Some of the players are now asking for the game to be reverted back to the previous version. I don't think that will happen, but I do think things will get better over time. These same players sometimes forget they're playing an early alpha version of the game. Anyways, this is my initial impressions of the recent update. The handling is VERY different. I can't say if it's better or worst, but it is something I had to get used to. Some players claimed the game would crash but I never experienced that. The only graphics glitch I'm having an issue with is the lack of shadows at curtain points. It gives this "Floating" look to the car that makes it seem unnatrual. I've also seen cases where wheels of a smashed car will be floating in the air. In the previous version of the game you'd see wheels get crumpled up into the car frame in a way that wouldn't be possible in reality. Neither that nor the floating tire are ideal from a visual perspective, but that'll be more work for their soft-body physics in future updates I'm sure.

Game Update: 11/20/2015 New game mode, Lawn Mower Derby. This goofy little game mode reminds me of the mini-games that were part of the Flatout series of games. Unknown if this will stay in the game, or if it's just a "toy" thrown into the game to pacify the players who have been waiting all this time.

So, a funny thing happened to me in this race. In one of the early turns I'm sliding a little too far off track. I brace myself to hit the machines on the side of the road, and... clip through them. Since the game is still in development, I decide on the 2nd lap "Let's try it again to make sure." Clip through again. So the next track-side heavy equipment I see I think "Are all of these like that?" I smash into one to find out. "Nope... That one's real" Finished as a DNF. Also unrelated but from the front, with this paint color, this car makes me think of Ash's Oldsmobile from the "Evil Dead" movies.
