I almost survived to see the end of this battle. Usually I don't make it to the end in a destroyer. The Clemson Class vessels were one of the most numerous pre-WWII ship types built by the United States, with over 150 constructed. They were an advancement of the Wickes Class destroyer. As such, they were built with the same flush deck design that gave the hull stronger integrity. Some of the Clemson and the Wickes class ships were transfered to the British Royal Navy and became known as the Town Class destroyers. This trade was known as the "Destroyers for Bases Agreement" where the United States gave the Royal Navy destroyers in exchange for British owned land, which the US could use for military bases. As for the lead ship of the class, USS Clemson (DD-186), during World War II the ship would be converted into a seaplane tender, designated (AVP-17) and later again as (AVD-4). Clemson served in an anti-submarine role, centered around carrier USS Bogue (CVE-9). Within this group Clemson claimed the destruction of eight German submarines and contributed to the sinking of U-172. While the ship was originally named after Henry A. Clemson, a sailor who was lost at sea, when the ship was decommissioned the bell was sent to the town of Clemson, South Carolina.
