Back in March (2016) there was an event to earn the Polikarpov I-180-3 along with a pretty cool paint scheme. Here I take it out for a spin and earn a few achievements. ("Hat Trick", "Quick Shot" and "Interceptor") The design was an attempt to replace or improve the performance of the aging I-16 aircraft. The layout of the aircraft had to be modified to accommodate the larger M-88 radial engine. Other noticeable changes were the shape and design of the wings and the modified engine cowling which gave it a sleeker, more aerodynamic look. During a test flight of the original I-180 prototype, famed pilot Valery Chkalov was killed in a crash which resulted in multiple arrests by the Soviet Union. This incident would cause Polikarpov to fall out of favor with Joseph Stalin. A second prototype, I-180-2 would also crash, killing Tomas Suzi. The final prototype, I-180-3 saw very limited production, resulting in only 10 aircraft being built. These aircraft were designated I-180S and performed similar to the I-16 with slightly more stability. In late 1940 the project was cancelled by the government. Some reports indicate it was cancelled due to the development of the Yak-1 and the LaGG-3. Others claim it was more personal, with Stalin disliking Polikarpov after Chkalov's death. Information backing this theory indicates that, despite some of the problems, which were being worked on, in some areas the I-180 out-performed the German Bf 109 aircraft.
