This battle was during the 2016 "Japanese Threat" event, featuring Allies versus Axis. The IL-2 has gone under many nicknames to describe its durability, including "Flying Tank", "Flying Infantryman", "Armored Tub" and "Hunchback" to name a few. However when it was first introduced it was discovered the plane was vulnerable from the rear. This was largely due to it's low altitude flying practices and the slower speed which German fighters could take advantage of. A two-seat variant of the aircraft would be introduced in March 1942. Prior to that a much more crude introduction of a rear gunner was needed. Early Il-2s were modified in the field by cutting holes in the fuselage behind the Pilot, and stringing a canvas sling for the gunner to sit on. Often the gunner would take a 12.7 mm machine gun and fix it to an improvised mount. This early modification had mixed results. It provided the aircraft with machine gun cover from the rear, however the gunner was completely exposed and unprotected. Also the extra weight, the shift in the center of gravity, and the aerodynamic drag created by the modification reduced the planes speed and maneuverability. The aforementioned two seater production model of the aircraft removed the need for this front-line modification in later Il-2s.
