It had a number of mechanical problems, leaked fuel and was poorly armored. Despite this, it was one of the highest flying US aircraft until the P-38 Lightning. The aircraft served in China, under the Lend-Lease agreement and was delivered by the American Volunteer Group, also known as the Flying Tigers. However the aircraft was considered obsolete by many and as soon as replacements were ready, the P-43 only served as trainers and non-combat roles. Some of these aircraft were renamed "RP-43", and used by the Australian Royal Air Force. They were restricted from combat and primarily used for photo reconnaissance aircraft.
