Red eye tetra are native to South America; inhabiting rivers with submerged vegetation, they are distributed around Paranaíba, São Francisco, upper Parana, Paraguay and Uruguay River basins. They live in groups & feed on small insects, insect larvae, crustaceans & plant matter. Now all Red Eye Tetra available for fish keeping hobby are captive bred, we have 3 common types of red eye tetra which are available now, the regular red eye tetra, balloon red eye tetra & the albino red eye tetra.
Scientific name of red eye tetra is Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae. In the wild they can grow just under 3 inches, in aquarium they around 2 inches & live up to 3 to 5 years,
The name red eye tetra is due to the unique red coloration above their eyes, grayish body coloration with black spot on the tail fin makes they look amazing in a Planted aquarium.
How to Set up a Red Eye Tetra Aquarium?
Red eye tetra prefer planted aquariums of at least 20 gallon, in their natural habitat they are surrounded by Echinodorus plants commonly called as Amazon sword plant, this can be used like you can see in the video. I have also used driftwood, this helps with maintaining water parameters. The best filter for planted aquarium would be a Hang On Back or HOB filter with moderate water movement. Make sure the aquarium has plenty of open swimming area as this fish are schooling fish & they should always be kept in a group of 6 or more. They chase each other picking a pecking order.
What to feed red eye tetras?
I feed tetra bits as staple food, I feed varied food like pellets, flakes, freeze dried worms, live food like micro worms, daphnia, blood worms etc. I feed twice a day.
Compatible tank mates for red eye tetra?
Avoid long finned fish & slow moving fish as red eye tetras can be fin nippers. Similar sized fish with same temperament, like Rosy barbs, Black skirt Tetra, Serpae Tetra etc. The aquarium in the video has juvenile Chinese algae eater, Botia Loach. I have kept these fish with mollies in the past without any aggression issues.
Water parameters for Redeye Tetra?
Temperature range - 72 to 79 °F (22 to 26°C)
pH range - 6 to 8 without drastic changes.
Water hardness - under 180 ppm.
Difference between male & female red eye tetra?
Visual difference is limited to shape of the body. Female red eye tetra are round bodied whereas male red eye tetra are slimmer.
Breeding red eye tetra is easy in case you want to. You just need a breeding aquarium & 2 to 3 pairs. They are egg layers & will eat their eggs if not removed from the breeding tank after they spawn.
Remember these fish should be kept in a group of at least 6 if not more. I find the balloon red eye tetra to be a little less aggressive.
